Perfect Fried Onions

1-2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
3 small to medium onions thinly sliced
a pinch of sugar
Salt to taste

Melt butter is a saucepan on low heat. Place onions in the pan and toss in the butter. Keep on low heat for 35 minutes to an hour stirring occasionally. In the last five minutes add sugar and salt to taste.
