Wait? You Mean 2021 is Over? What Happened? I Blacked out.

January Newsletter

I’m ready for another go in 2022! I skip saying goodbye to 2021, because while I wouldn’t exactly call 2021 my favorite year it was 365 days of some really great things.  To dismiss 2021 and “start fresh” in 2022, would discredit all the things I have learned over the past year and trust me there was a lot to take in.  So, I’m ready to go in 2022… with some adjustments.

My biggest adjustment this year will be my use of time.  I have often said over the past year, and I do not think that I am alone when I say, “my time was not my own.”   In June, when Bambi and his group of deer friends decided to snack on all by beet greens, I spent the next two hours trying to replant.  Or when the pigs decided that my time would be well spent picking up the barn after they broke out of their pen and rummaged through the feed bags like hangry teenagers.  The deer, pigs, cows, chickens, drought, weeds all took more time than I was willing to give them, making my time theirs and not my own.  While I would like to say that I’m taking my time back, I know issues will always arise that need my time.  I am just hoping that this year I’ll plan a time for those unexpected barn cleanings.

With the recent labor shortage, we have had to get creative with our hiring process.

I will not be the only one making some adjustment this year.  The chickens will also be adjusting to the colder weather and their new spacious digs. My handy partner and myself managed to finish the second 30-hen coop, while continuing to stay married!  The hens have yet to make a home in their new coop as they are creatures of habit and need to be trained.  It would be like if you slept on the floor next to your suitable bed all because you were used to sleeping on the floor.   Overtime, they will discover that their new coop is nicer, cleaner, and roomier.  They just need time to adjust.

My life this January. Shelling Popcorn. Only 300 pounds left to go.

Last, well not the last but the last one for this newsletter, will be the adjustments on those little humans that live in my house, eat my food, and ask a thousand questions a day.  Since October, they have been animal and chore-free and I would like to put a stop to that.  Come March through May we will be getting our new calves, piglets, and chicks, bringing back all the chores those little humans complain about but secretly love.  I will keep you up to date with pictures and videos as they come in.  I am also hoping to host a Baby Farm Animal Day as the weather turns.  More info to come!

As January is the month of new beginnings, it is also the month to sign up for a new CSA farm and pantry share!  The link below will provide more information on what farm share is best for you, how to sign up, and how to pay.  Early bird offers are available and egg shares go fast, so don’t forget to sign up early.
