Where the Hell Have I Been?

I say this jokingly of course, because Lord knows I have never really left the farm since April.  But now here I am, enjoying the start of the “office” season planning and scheming for next year’s crop.  It is at this point where I completely disregard any mental notes I made to myself during the summer.  Like, “during the winter I should really clean out the storage room.”  Or “in the winter I will wash all the cupboards so don’t have to look at the splattered spaghetti sauce.”  Every time I seem to evade all these projects that were created in the summer months when my time was not my own.  Instead of the dreaded storage room cleaning, I am hanging lights in the new chicken coop that we built over Halloween.  Or I am literally seed counting for next spring just in case the supply chain disrupts the seed supply.  Seriously, seed counting ranks above cleaning the cupboards.

Every now and then my business/life/farming partner can put my work/life into perspective.  He said my unfinished winter “to-do” list isn’t about a lack of motivation, but the resistance present in completing a task.  Take for example my storage room, I go down there weekly and move boxes around throw a few things away and ultimately put a band-aid on the problem.  I put in the time, and it is not my lack of motivation to get the room to where I want it.  It is the resistance that is keeping my storage room looking the way it is.  I am resisting the need to buy the appropriate amount of shelving that it will take to move the boxes up from the floor.  I am resisting the need to remove my children’s dress up clothes because that would mark the end of a beautiful childhood activity and a reminder that my children are getting older.  All this resistance keeps my to-do list full.

Seed Counting

So now what?  Well, it is time to change the script I have been telling myself.  Rather than, “I am unmotivated and that’s why I am not finishing this project,” it needs to be “what am I resisting about this project and how can I get past that.”  It is not about taking the path of least resistance, but facing it head on and pressing that little orange button on the amazon app that says “Add to Cart Now” when ordering that shelving unit.  After that… back to seed counting.

New nesting boxes!

Lastly, I know I have just talked about the start of my office season, but ironically it is also the start of the growing season.  Growing share members that is!  Starting in January, the 2022 share sign up will open.  Here is a sneak peek!
